Lipoma Removal Surgery

Lipoma Removal in Aligarh — Dr. Amit Agrawal

A lipoma is a slow-growing, benign tumour of fatty tissue that develops just under the skin. Lipomas typically feel soft, doughy, and easily movable when pressed, and they most commonly appear on the neck, shoulders, back, arms, thighs, or trunk. While lipomas are almost always harmless and not cancerous, they can grow large enough to cause cosmetic concerns, pressure on surrounding nerves, or discomfort with movement. Multiple lipomas in the same individual — a condition known as familial multiple lipomatosis — can also occur and often have a hereditary basis.

Most lipomas do not require treatment, but removal is recommended when the lump is growing rapidly, becoming painful, restricting movement, located in a visible area, or when there is any diagnostic uncertainty about whether the mass is truly a lipoma versus another type of soft-tissue tumour. Surgical excision is the definitive treatment and provides both a confirmed histopathological diagnosis and complete removal of the lesion in a single procedure.

At Dr Amit Aesthetics in Aligarh, Dr. Amit Agrawal performs lipoma excision using plastic-surgery techniques that prioritise both complete removal and the best possible cosmetic outcome. Incisions are planned along natural skin creases or relaxed skin tension lines, the lipoma capsule is removed in its entirety to minimise recurrence, and meticulous closure is performed in layers so the final scar is as fine and inconspicuous as possible.

Procedures & Techniques

  • Standard surgical excision under local anaesthesia
  • Minimal-incision lipoma removal for smaller lesions
  • Excision of multiple lipomas in a single sitting (familial multiple lipomatosis)
  • Deep or large lipoma removal under regional or general anaesthesia
  • Histopathological examination of every excised specimen
  • Layered plastic-surgical closure for an optimal cosmetic scar

Recovery & Aftercare

Most lipoma excisions are performed as outpatient procedures lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Patients return home the same day with a small dressing over the wound. Mild soreness and bruising for two to four days is normal and well controlled with simple oral pain medication. Sutures are typically removed at seven to ten days, or sooner on the face. Light daily activities can be resumed within 24 to 48 hours, while strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for two to three weeks, particularly after removal from the shoulder, back, or trunk. The scar continues to mature and fade over six to twelve months, and Dr. Agrawal will guide you on silicone gel application and sun protection to optimise final appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are lipomas dangerous or cancerous?
Lipomas are almost always benign — they are simple, slow-growing collections of fatty tissue and are not cancerous. In rare cases, a fatty-looking lump can turn out to be a liposarcoma (a malignant soft-tissue tumour), which is why any lump that is growing rapidly, painful, hard, fixed to deeper tissue, or larger than five centimetres should be assessed by a plastic surgeon. Every lipoma we remove is sent for histopathology to confirm the diagnosis.
Will I have a visible scar after lipoma removal?
Some scar is unavoidable any time the skin is incised, but Dr. Agrawal's plastic-surgical training is specifically aimed at making that scar as fine and well-placed as possible. Incisions are planned along natural skin creases or relaxed skin tension lines, the wound is closed in layers, and patients are guided on silicone gel and sun protection to optimise the final result. In most areas the scar fades to a thin, pale line within six to twelve months.
Can a lipoma come back after it has been removed?
Recurrence after complete surgical excision is uncommon, typically below 1–2%, because the entire lipoma capsule is removed during surgery. Patients with familial multiple lipomatosis may develop new lipomas at other sites over time, but those are fresh lesions rather than true recurrences of the original lipoma.
Is lipoma removal painful and what anaesthesia is used?
Most lipomas are removed comfortably under local anaesthesia — a small injection numbs the skin and tissue around the lump so the procedure itself is painless. Very large lipomas, those in deeper tissue planes, or removal of multiple lipomas in one sitting may be performed under regional or general anaesthesia for greater patient comfort. Post-operative discomfort is mild and well controlled with oral pain medication.
